Mondi has joined hands with the globally leading FMCG giant- Unilever, by producing a recyclable mono-material solution for its Turkish Knorr dry soup powder range. Within their sustainability living plan initiative, Unilever has decided on a recyclable polypropylene (PP) mono-material solution which is produced at Mondi’s Turkish flexible packaging plant in Kalenobel.

It was in 2018 that Unilever had approached Mondi Kalenobel with the prospect to replace a multi material laminate with a recyclable mono-material film alternative which effectively preserves the shelf-life of the food products.

Atahan Özgünay, R&D package development manager for Unilever’s Knorr and Lipton brands in North Africa, Middle East, Turkey and Russia states that: “The most important step in eliminating plastic waste is preventing it getting into the environment in the first place. That’s why we are committed to collecting and processing more plastic packaging than we sell by 2025. Solutions from innovative partners throughout the value chain, such as Mondi, will help us on this journey.”

This new packaging solution has been introduced to the Turkish market for selected Knorr designs and it is likely that Unilever is going to plan to expand the usage of this packaging solution for other product ranges from the brand. This move to find new packaging solutions is part of Unilever’s commitment that 100 percent of the plastic packaging used in its products is reusable, recyclable and compostable by 2025.
